Rajasthan has witnessed its wettest July in 69 years, recording 285 mm of rainfall, a staggering 77% surplus over the state’s long-period average of 161.4 mm for the month, according to the Meteorological Centre in Jaipur.

This year’s downpour comes close to surpassing the July rainfall record of 308 mm set in 1956, marking a significant climatic event for the desert state.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued multiple warnings as heavy to very heavy rainfall continues across various districts. Very heavy rain alerts have been sounded for Bikaner, Churu, Jhunjhunu, Nagaur, Jaipur, Dausa, and Sikar, while Jodhpur, Pali, Ajmer, Bhilwara, and several eastern districts are under heavy rain advisories.

Earlier in July, the impact of persistent rain was evident when Ajmer’s Ana Sagar Lake overflowed, causing flooding and road closures. Waterlogging forced the closure of key roads and even disrupted services at the Jawaharlal Nehru Government Hospital, where rainwater entered hospital wards.

Authorities, including Ajmer Municipal Corporation, deployed sandbags to contain the overflow, while health and civic officials advised residents to remain indoors during red alerts issued by the IMD.

Municipal officials attributed the flooding to escape channels from Ana Sagar Lake, which had been opened by nearly 30 inches, leading to the inundation of low-lying areas.

With high humidity at 95%, temperatures around 25.2°C, and southwesterly winds, weather conditions remain conducive for further rainfall in the region.

Officials continue to monitor the situation closely, urging the public to avoid flood-prone zones and remain alert as monsoon activity persists into August.
